I Knit Brisbane – Knitting and Crocheting in Public for Charity
10:30am June 1st 2010, King George Square
As part of the I Knit Brisbane project there will be a public knitting and crochet for charity.
Well known charity knitting groups Knitting for Brisbane’s Needy and Yarn Friendship Group will be in attendance to help get persons started who want to learn or re-learn knit or crochet and give further information about their groups.
Yarn has been donated from many generous people in the community for this event and we are hoping to make scarves, lap blankets and beanies to help the homeless , persons at risk of homeless and families experiencing financial difficulties in the Brisbane area.
Knitting for Brisbane’s Needy
Charities have told us people don’t tend to donate warm clothing for Queensland’s needy as they think it doesn’t get cold enough here, but it does especially for those living on the streets in the cold and wet. They also like to be able to give some new items to the needy as it boosts their self confidence.
So get those needles working…anything – booties, bonnets, beanies, scarves, jumpers, cardigans (for babies, children and adults) and even knitted toys would be greatly appreciated. There is no pressure to make any particular number of items, just whatever you can do will be great!
Since inception in January 2006 until 31 December, 2009, there has been 40,167 items donated to the less fortunate. In December 2009 ALONE, members made and donated 18,543 items! Which was incredible but in 2010 we are hoping to get 20,100 items donated!
Donated items which has helped homeless, premature babies, youth in crisis, aboriginal settlement; animal refuges, aged homes, families in need and a crisis centre for women/children.

For the past 6 weeks Loop In! a drop in craft session series, has been running at the Exchange Community Centre in Kelvin Grove.
Aside from untangling the many knots of yarn that emerge from the striped shopping trolley –we have made mushrooms, pole cosies, pompoms and crochet rope.
Participants have been children, learners and re-discoverers of craft as well as knitters crossing over the dark side of crochet.
It’s been a creative and rowdy series of sessions.
I Knit Brisbane have a lounge area set aside in the Bleeding Heart Gallery especially for knitters and crocheters attending the Saviours of the Lost Arts Workshops.
Come and finish off your creations, or just sit down and craft in between workshop sessions – it isn’t too late to start on a pompom!
Time’s getting short, our projects are coming nearer to completion, the urge to attach knitted objects d’art to CBD structures is growing.
Its not long now til the installation eve….so lets get these projects cast off, tied up and ready to be put out there.
Craft session are being held at the Exchange community space in Kelvin Grove Urban Village on Saturday 22 May from 9:30 am until about 1pm
Drop by and knit a couple of stitches, crochet some mushrooms, or wrap a pom pom.
Interested but not sure of your skills? There’s still time to come and learn, click here for more session information.
